Leadership Program

A key to the long-term success of any department is to be able to develop and support current and future leaders and provide them with the skills and insights that will enable them to perform at the highest level, as they take on leadership roles and tasks.

While there are many opportunities for leadership training, including our own Faculty of Health Science’s leadership program, the department has offered a foundational leadership skills development program for the past five years. This program is open to all faculty, learners and staff interested in improving their performance in their current leadership roles, or preparing them for roles they are likely to take on in the near future.

The program includes four half-day workshop learning sessions looking at general leadership skills including: leading self and engaging others, achieving results, developing coalitions and systems transformations; communities of practice of 8 -10 people, including one just for residents in leadership roles and opportunities for mentoring.

Expandable List

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences is proud to offer the McMaster Psychiatry Leadership Skills Development Program. The program has recently undergone a substantial redesign to offer a broader exposure to leadership principles and practices that extend outside academic medicine.

In person workshop session dates will take place on: September 27, November 22, January 31, and March 28. Virtual Community of Practice sessions will take place on: October 25, December 13, February 28, and April 25.

The program includes:
  • A series of bimonthly half-day workshops facilitated by distinguished leaders from business and industry, high-performance athletes and health care organizations
  • Meetings of facilitated communities of practice that allow for in-depth and candid discussion of leadership challenges and other professional issues
  • Multiple assessments of leadership skills and areas for improvement

Entry into the program is by application and final decisions will be made by the program facilitators. The program is ideally suited for faculty or residents in the department who are currently, or will be in the near future, playing a leadership role within a team, program or organization. Interested individuals who do not have an identified leadership role are also encouraged to apply.

Participation in the program requires a year-long commitment. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program.

Interested individuals may submit a leadership program application and CV to Laura Ellis.

The deadline to apply for the 2024-2025 leadership program is September 6, 2024.
