Education
Length of Training
The geriatric psychiatry subspecialty program at McMaster University, consistent with the Royal College requirements, is a two-year program. The intention is for residents to enter this program as PGY-5’s in an overlap year with their general psychiatry residency program and complete it with a PGY-6 year solely in the general psychiatry residency program.
Curriculum Highlights
The geriatric subspecialty provides interdisciplinary shared teaching sessions with neuropsychology, geriatric medicine and other psychiatric subspecialty residents. Our formal curriculum also includes e-modules developed by McMaster University and Dalhousie University. Well-established electives are available to subspecialty residents in areas such as geriatric medicine, shared care in long-term care settings and GeriMedRisk. The program also supports residents who wish to pursue unique experiences as flexibility is built into our curriculum.
