The McMaster program believes that emergency Psychiatry training should occur within a clinical teaching unit. Emergency on-call experiences are therefore delivered at a single centralized site, with senior and junior residents working together as part of a psychiatry team that includes staff psychiatrists, skilled emergency psychiatry nurses and social workers. All residents receive direct training in managing agitated patients. The Emergency Psychiatric Service is well equipped with texts as well as direct computer links to Internet Resources. Call frequency for junior residents (PGY1 & PGY2) ranges from an average of 1/7 to 1/9. Frequency for senior residents (PGY3 to PGY5) goes down to and average of 1/12 to 1/14. On site handover takes place each morning with an experienced emergency psychiatrist.

Call is overnight with all residents going home immediately after morning handover for a post-call day.

Beginning in January 2021, Pgy2 to Pgy-5 residents will gain experience with Inpatient Psychiatry Call, with approximately 4 shifts per academic year.  The location of the call will be aligned with the resident’s core rotations during that academic year.
