Psychiatry residency training completed at the University of Toronto and Dalhousie University, with additional training in consultation-liaison (CL) psychiatry and behavioural neurology. He received additional neuropsychiatry training at the Institute of Neurology, London, England (2003).  From 2002-2007, he worked as a CL psychiatrist and Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University. He has been recognized for his passion for medical education.  He has presented at international conferences and has been an invited speaker across disciplines.  His research interests and publications have been in the areas of cardiac psychiatry, multiple sclerosis and medical education. 

He joined the Department of Psychiatry at PRHC in 2007, where he has established the integrated psychiatry-geriatric CL psychiatry service.  He also has a strong relationship with the greater Peterborough family health team, to whom he provides collaborative care. He has been the Psychiatry Lead Preceptor for the Queen’s (Peterborough site) Family residency training program since its inception, and is an Associate Adjunct Professor with The Department of Family Medicine, Queen’s University. In 2015, Dr. Ghatavi became Chief and Medical Director of PRHC’s Mental Health and Addictions Program, and is working collaboratively with care partners to established coordinated pathways and systems of care.
