Psychiatry Horizontal Electives
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences offers horizontal elective opportunities to McMaster medical students. Our horizontal opportunities are observational only. All psychiatry electives must be booked centrally through our electives coordinator. Please do not contact supervisors directly to book these placements.
Please note, these electives are currently on hold.
- To get started, please review our horizontal electives guide (.docx) for the various clinical settings we have to offer.
- Once you have reviewed the guide, please email us advising your preferred areas and include the dates you are available.
- Our coordinator will liaise with our supervisors and contact you once a placement is secured and confirmed.
- Please note that some areas are quite popular and fill up fast, so please contact us early to avoid disappointment.
- Once the placement date(s) are confirmed, be sure to register in MedSIS prior to the first placement date.
- The McMaster undergraduate medical education program office requires a horizontal teaching contribution record to be completed at the end of your placement signed by both yourself and your supervisor. Please refer to the Medportal electives page for more information.
- Send your completed evaluation to Deb Klunder via email.
For questions or information about our psychiatry horizontal elective placements, email undergraduate psychiatry electives coordinator.
Psychiatry Block Electives
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences offers block elective opportunities to McMaster University medical students. All McMaster electives must be booked centrally through our electives coordinator. Please do not contact supervisors directly to book these placements.
It is important to note that the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences does not currently participate in a lottery process for McMaster students, except for the psychiatry summer boot camp. Therefore, requests will be triaged on a first-come-first-serve basis.
- To get started, please review our block electives guide (.docx) to decide which area of psychiatry interests you.
- Once you have reviewed the guide, book your request through MedSIS advising your areas of preference in the comment section.
- Our coordinator will liaise with our supervisors and contact you once a placement is secured and confirmed.
- Please note, we may have to divide your time between preceptors depending on both popularity and unforeseen scheduling conflicts.
- At high volume request times, we may cap the total number of requests accepted, so please apply early to avoid disappointment.
For questions or information about our psychiatry block electives, email undergraduate psychiatry electives coordinator.
