Remembering Dr. Russell Joffe
It is with great sadness that I am writing to let you know that Russell Joffe, our former Chair and a former Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University passed away last night.
I do not have any further details, but Russell was an influential and respected leader, colleague, scientist and mentor and a major figure in the history of our medical school. After graduating from medical school in South Africa he completed his Psychiatry Residency training at McMaster and then moved to the University of Toronto, before returning to Hamilton 10 years later to become Department Chair and Chief of Psychiatry at St. Joseph’s. Amongst his many contributions here was his role in establishing our Mood Disorders Program, which became and has remained one of Canada’s foremost academic programs. After he left McMaster, he became Dean of the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and most recently he was the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Science at Staten Island University Hospital in New York.
At this time our thoughts are with his family.
