Prior to medicine, Dr. Harms completed degrees in Music Performance, Music Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Currently, Dr. Harms currently practices as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at McMaster Children’s Hospital, Child and Youth Mental Health Program, with a focus on general outpatient care. She is actively involved in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate learners as well as teaching within the Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Harms is the Program Director for Postgraduate Psychiatry Training at McMaster University and is focused on enhancing scholarly efforts across the program. Additional activities include pursing a PhD in Education, being an elected member of Senate at McMaster University and acting as an examiner for the Royal College. Dr. Harms co-chairs the Committee for Global Mental Health within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and within this role, she is actively involved in leading a collaborative educational initiative at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Western Uganda. This partnership is largely resident driven and strives to build postgraduate educational capacity in psychiatry at MUST.
